All SASS® Affiliated clubs host a regular shooting schedule. Most hold a minimum of a monthly match. A clubs monthly shooting schedule is available on the SASS® website and is listed in The Cowboy Chronicle. You’ll see whether they shoot on the “2nd Saturday” of every month, or the “1st Sunday” of every month, etc. While no one who ever shows up to watch and learn will ever be turned away, it is suggested that you reach out to the club beforehand and let them know you might swing by. This gives the club and its members an opportunity to be prepared for your visit. Many members and clubs have special welcome programs and ambassadors present to answer any questions you might have along the way. Additionally, most clubs will bring along extra supplies and let you even “give it a go!”.
Eye Protection is MANDATORY. Make sure you take along some eye protection (sunglasses) If you have ear protection, it is highly recommended as well.
Monthly matches usually consist of at least 6 stages of competition. Competitors break up into “Posses” to shoot together- moving from stage to stage as a group.
You’ll find families shooting together, and all ages and demographics represented- from 8 to 85 and everything in between. All SASS® matches are fully costumed events- meaning that all competitors will be required to meet the minimum costuming requirements. Many have equated going to a SASS® event as stepping back in time- like a Renaissance festival for the Old West!
When the shooting is done for the day, you’ll find folks gather for the results in a common area determined by the club. Some clubs have a lunch together and sit around visiting and catching up with their shooting friends.
SASS® Clubs Annual Matches and Special Matches
In addition to their regularly scheduled monthly match schedule, many SASS® Affiliated clubs host special events throughout the year. Some host what we refer to as their “Annual Match”- a larger gathering of shooters and members- not just from that club, but many SASS® members from all over the world. Additionally, many SASS® clubs hold special matches; many for various charities around the world. Spectators are always welcome at SASS® events- and you’ll find no shortage of enthusiastic competitors ready to share their knowledge and passion for the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting™!
Eye Protection is MANDATORY. Make sure you take along some eye protection (sunglasses) If you have ear protection, it is highly recommended as well.
Annual & Special matches usually consist of at least 6-8 stages of competition, with most averaging 10-12. Many of the larger matches will spread the event over 2-3 days and pack in loads of social activities as well. Most coordinate attendee entertainment, and welcome vendors and exhibitors as well. Just like in a local monthly match, competitors break up into “Posses” to shoot together- moving from stage to stage as a group- but if the number of competitors is high and the stages are over 8, most matches will spread the competition out over a few days- meaning sometimes the posse’s will shoot a different “wave” each day. (Morning wave/mid-day wave/late wave), etc.
You’ll find even more families shooting together, and all ages and demographics represented- from 8 to 85 and everything in between. All SASS® matches are fully costumed events- meaning that all competitors will be required to meet the minimum costuming requirements. Many have equated going to a SASS® Cowboy Action Shooting™ event as stepping back in time- like a Renaissance festival for the Old West!
SASS® Sanctioned Championship Match Program
SASS® Sanctioned Championship matches at all levels are held across the nation- and the globe! Check around for a State Championship event in your area for a championship match experience! Many State Championship events grew from successful monthly matches into successful annual matches before applying for a State Championship title. Clubs that have the drive to host a SASS® Sanctioned match are the cream of the crop of SASS Affiliated clubs! These are the folks that have travelled the trail a time or two- and they’ll put on one heck of an event!
