The advent of simple to use black powder substitutes has assisted in an explosion in the numbers of shooters in the black powder categories, but a lot of potential black powder shooters are scared off by tales of complicated loading and cleaning of black powder firearms. Captain Baylor explores the available black powder substitutes and simple ways to use them successfully, including simple loading techniques for rifle, pistol, shotgun, and percussion pistols, and some quick and easy methods for cleaning guns after using the substitutes. For those who want to use “real” black powder, he discusses simple procedures for using Goex Cowboy, a black powder designed for Cowboy Action Shooting. He discusses the “store bought” ammunition available. He shows which of the substitutes is hottest, and which gives the most accuracy. He describes an easy method for the care and feeding of percussion pistols, and he has several suggestions for making your percussion pistols as reliable as cartridge pistols. Too many shooters are discouraged from shooting in the black powder categories by the necromancy thought to be required to use real black powder and the difficulty of getting it in several areas of the country due to local regulations. Captain Baylor shows how to make it easy.
