In addition to the exhibition hall, the SASS Convention provides a daily schedule of educational seminars, guest speakers and entertainment. Seminars are conducted by experts in the various areas of the sport and many of the most recognized competitors in the game. From top shooters and gunsmiths to leather makers and reloading professionals to clothing designers, the SASS Convention has it all. Your Conventioneer entry includes one free $10 seminar per day. Using 19th century photographs, paintings, and catalogs Captain Baylor explores how cowboys, lawmen, “townies,” and outlaws actually dressed as opposed to how the movies thought they dressed. Since real cowboys rode all day while SASS Cowboys run 10 yard dashes with guns and walk a lot, Captain Baylor explores comfort and practicality as well as authenticity. If your boots resemble medieval torture devices after several hours at END of TRAIL, he has several ideas for boots that look appropriate but are comfortable. Some myths will be shattered, others proven to be true. Various accoutrements will be put into their proper time period so you can look like a cowboy of 1875 or a banker of 1890. If you want to attend the ball and look properly dressed for a formal occasion in 1881, Captain Baylor has details of what gentlemen wore to parties in the nineteenth century. Ladies, you might want to attend and bring your husband along so he will be as well dressed for the ball as you are. Over 200 photographs and drawings are used to demonstrate every facet of 19th Century men’s western clothing with practical suggestions for making your shooting costume authentic and comfortable. Captain Baylor has several tips for winning costume contests. If you are afraid of facing costume contest judges, he can help. Captain Baylor has won numerous SASS costume contests including END of TRAIL, Winter Range, the SASS Convention, and several Regional and State Championships. He has acted as a judge at costume contests at the SASS Convention, END of TRAIL, Winter Range, and numerous other events.

Good stage design can make or break a match. Safety, timing, flow, target placement, shooting sequences, and the Cowboy “fun factor” can be controlled, and you can be a hero. Safety can be controlled by appropriate stage design, transferring the stage writer’s “intent” to paper, controlling the time of a stage for balance between other stages, how to avoid posse questions after the stage has been presented, keeping the shooting order simple, a target matrix to give you un-repeated sequences for over two years, category friendly stages, shotgun target placement for different shotgun types, use of props, make it spotter friendly, keep it cowboy, use of movement, the flow of the stage, use of targets, target choices, pitfalls, and the do’s and don’ts.

The “black art” of using blackpowder has been simplified by the introduction of simple to use blackpowder substitutes such as American Pioneer Powder and by the introduction of Goex Cowboy, a true blackpowder optimized for Cowboy Action Shooting™. These products have assisted in an explosion in the numbers of shooters in the blackpowder categories, but tales of complicated loading and cleaning of blackpowder firearms have scared off many potential converts. Captain Baylor, who was chosen by Cowboys TV to teach blackpowder on air, explores the available blackpowder substitutes and simple ways to use them successfully, including simple loading techniques for rifle, pistol, shotgun, and percussion pistols, and some quick and easy methods for cleaning guns after using the substitutes. For those who want to use “real” blackpowder, he discusses simple procedures for using Goex Cowboy and other “holy” blackpowder. He discusses the “store bought” ammunition available. He shows which of the substitutes is hottest, and which gives the most accuracy. He describes an easy method for the care and feeding of percussion pistols, and he has several suggestions for making your percussion pistols as reliable as cartridge pistols. Captain Baylor shows how to make it easy.

This seminar will cover the new October 2009 Version of the SASS Wild Bunch Handbook in depth. Both the reasons behind the rules and understanding what they mean will be discussed. The rules may not be clear to some who have no background in "Combat" handgun sports. It will be similar to an RO-I class, but for Wild Bunch. Besides the rules we will have leather and firearms to clarify questions on what may or may not be legal. Time will also be spent explaining the nuances of dealing with the 1911 pistol on the firing line. Clearing various malfunctions, slide lock failures, magazine issues, etc. Pecos Clyde will be handling the PowerPoint portion of the seminar and assisting with the pistol drills.

What works for shooting and what to avoid, how to keep your hat on, and keeping guns in place. Objective: To encourage lady shooters to dress the part during the shoot as well as at the Ball. The Seminar will provide a brief history of Victorian dresses, being comfortable in Victorian clothing, versatile outfits – pack it all in one trunk, what works for shooting and what to avoid—slim dress verses full, lined skirt verses unlined, shoe styles, how to wear a bustle and your gun belt, how to keep your gun belt in place, how to keep your hat on, and ideas for building hats. Why doesn't my skirt hang right? Tricks and tips of edge finishing. And, anything else you can think of! Aspen Filly has a MFA Degree in Technical Theatre and has worked professionally for 30 years designing and constructing costumes for the theatres in the Denver area. She has also taught Costume Design and Construction classes at the University of Colorado in Denver.

New shooter clinics cover the basics in SASS History, safety rules, costuming, and firearms. Holding a new shooter clinic will make first time shooters more aware of what is happening, make them safer, and also make their first match experience more fun. The class will demonstrate how to advertise and hold a successful clinic. It is flexible and adoptable to your club. In the class, you will learn how to present a two-hour indoor session and then a two-hour range session. It is a structured way to introduce new shooters to the world of Cowboy Action.
